Clear aligners only work as well as you maintain them. Cloudy, stained or bacteria-coated trays aren't just unpleasant to wear โ they can also slow your treatment down. Here's the routine we walk every patient through at the start of treatment.
The daily routine
1. Rinse every time you remove them
Whenever you take your aligners out โ to eat, drink anything other than water, or brush โ rinse them immediately under lukewarm running water. This stops saliva and food particles from drying onto the plastic.
2. Brush gently, without toothpaste
Use a soft toothbrush (a spare one, not your regular toothbrush) with just water, or a manufacturer-approved aligner cleaning solution. Avoid regular toothpaste โ the mild abrasives in most pastes can scratch the aligner surface over time, and scratches trap bacteria and cause cloudiness.
3. Soak once a day
A daily soak in a dedicated aligner or retainer cleaning solution (or a diluted, alcohol-free antibacterial mouth rinse, if that's what you have on hand) helps clear bacteria that brushing alone misses. Avoid hot water for soaking โ it can warp the plastic.
4. Brush and floss your teeth before putting them back in
Food particles trapped between your teeth and the aligner for hours at a time is one of the more common causes of bad breath and cavities during aligner treatment โ not the aligners themselves. Always brush and floss before reinserting.
What to avoid
- Hot water: warps the plastic and can permanently distort the fit.
- Coloured or hot drinks with aligners in: tea, coffee, and coloured cold drinks can stain the plastic; remove aligners first.
- Denture cleaning tablets (unless approved): some are too harsh for aligner plastic โ check with us before using anything not specifically made for aligners.
- Leaving them out of the case: loose aligners in a tissue or pocket are the single most common way patients lose or damage a tray.
Signs your aligner needs attention
A little cloudiness that clears with cleaning is normal. Persistent white residue, a rough or sticky feel, or a bad smell that doesn't go away with your usual routine is worth mentioning at your next check-in โ we can advise whether it's a cleaning issue or if the tray needs replacing.
Wear time still matters most
Cleaning keeps your aligners comfortable and hygienic, but the single biggest factor in staying on schedule is wear time โ most systems need 20โ22 hours a day, aligners in for everything except eating, drinking (other than water), and cleaning. We check both wear compliance and aligner condition at your monthly visits.
